Twice a year, during the fall and spring, 13-15 Grade 12 students from Abbotsford’s high schools participate in the Abbotsford School District Hospital Observation Program at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. One morning a week for 5 consecutive weeks students are able to shadow health care professionals in various departments in the hospital. This opportunity is great for students who are interested in careers in nursing, imaging, diagnostic services and as physicians. Students have the opportunity to spend time in various departments such as pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, emergency room, surgical daycare, mental health, cardiac care, imaging, diagnostic services and various general care wards. Students get to watch the health care professionals interact with patients. This year one of the students was allowed to be present during a C-section birth, another loved rocking a pre-mature baby in NICU, interacting with an elderly diabetic patient was a highlight for a third. Another great career advantage for our students.
